Easy Like A Sunday Morning (Part I)

Sometimes in life, there are occasions that call for a stand-out dress so beautiful that it requires no other adornment (other than some liquid eyeliner and a charming smile, naturally.) But for the other 99% of the time, wouldn't it be wonderful to have a wardrobe stuffed full of perfectly-fitting, expensive-looking yet nonchalant basics? Imagine... You could more or less roll out of bed, blindly stick your hand in your wardrobe and put on the first few things you grab, and be highly likely to look pretty swish. That is the idea, anyway - it could go wrong if you happened to sieze three cardigans. But I digress!

The idea behind it is that your attire focuses not so much on the individual items, but how they are all put together. That old saucepot Marilyn Monroe was allegedly enraged if someone complimented the dress she wore instead of her looks, which is admittedly a bit diva-ish but I can see her point. A modern day beauty who is also an excellent representative of basics-love is Alexa Chung. She has, in fact, just bought out her own range of what are her wardrobe staples - 60's style dresses, high waisted shorts and leather jackets. Here are some good examples of some finely dressed ladies, both modern and classic, who's ensembles call attention to their natural good looks and innate sense of style.

... These are the kind of outfits I could wear all day, every day. In my dreams.

The always impreccable Diane Kruger recently made me realise that nude dresses and red lips make the most lovely combination known to mankind. The nonchalant up-do and minimal accessories focuses the attention the contradicting hues even more. Genius.

How To Be Adored

I'd like to point you in the direction of a highly lovely book that I purchased a couple of months ago, and still find myself constantly referring to. 'How To Be Adored', by Caroline Cox, ought not to be judged by its slightly self help-esque title, as it reads more like a manual for classic Hollywood era beauties. As well as preaching the virtues of being lovely to all you meet, it also features advice such as how to make your voice more appealing, how to dress for your figure (from Perfect Ballerina, i.e. Audrey Hepburn, to Mae West-style Big & Beautiful) and good old fashioned relationship.

My favourite element is the tips straight from the star's mouths, as well as sneaky tips from those who worked with them, which is something you rarely find in such books. For example, how do you think Audrey Hepburn enchanced those legendary doe-eyes? Her makeup artist seperated each individual eyelash with a pin. And Marlene Dietrich aquired that unrivaled bone structure through contouring powders and - rumour has it - having her molars removed.

Today, let's admire the wonderful stylings of trapeze artist/ model/ film-maker, Sarah Sophie Flicker. She can often seen having more fun than anyone else with her equally well-dressed friends, Zooey Deschanel, Karen Elson and Erin Fetherston, and has been featured in Lula more times than those Tabio heart-print tights. It is not hard to see why - with her milk white skin, waist length curls and a penchant for pastel, sparkling outfits - nay, costumes - she looks as though she has stepped straight of a Hans Christian Anderson tale. She also sports an enviable line in head-wear; in these photos alone she showcases a galaxy of stars, a crown of flowers and a sequinned cat mask, worn fascinater-style. Leopards and glamour pusses have long gone hand in hand, with some even going as far as owning one as a pet, and once again, the classic print is back in the fashion spotlight. Stylish types have been sporting leopard print everything, from 5-inch Louboutins to that Agent Provocateur leotard. However, I think leopard print looks best worn as nature intended - fluffy and furry - or as saucy underwear. It is particularly effective in the form of a warm furry coat (faux, naturally) or a coquettish little hat. Note in the example below, from the previously- blogged film 'An Education', how you and your friend can craftily co-ordinate by wearing one item each!

Your average resolution - for example, 'this year, I must stop eating cupcakes none-stop' - is rather depressing, which is surely getting your new year off onto a miserable start, non? Everbody Needs An Education

Today I'll show you some lovely images from the delightful new film, An Education. Set in the early 60's, the story is set around sixteen year old Jenny, played by promising new comer Carey Mulligan. Jenny is interested in good books, music and all things French, yet her parents are pushing her towards Oxford. She is bored beyond belief until and a handsome - and much older! - suitor comes along, and her life is turned upside down... but I shan't spoil it for you! My personal highlight of the film was the Parisian sequence, which reminded me of a cross between A Bout De Souffle and Funny Face... wonderful, non?

Aside from an intriguing coming of age story, a witty script written by the excellent Nick Hornby and some Lula magazine-worthy imagery, it features some absoloutely beautiful costumes. Jenny transforms from a pretty school girl to an Audrey Hepburn-esque stunner before our very eyes, in brocade shift dresses and chic up-do's courtesy of the equally well-dressed, loveably dim-witted Helen. It's not just the girls, either; the gents are equally dressed to the nines. Anyway, I hope you are inspired to go and see this film, it is well worth the hype it is recieving, not just from yours truly but everyone coming out the cinema! Enjoy.

Let Them Eat Cake!

Slightly off the usual topic of conversation on my humble little blog, but I do love to bake (and eat!) cakes. So on this quiet Sunday afternoon I decided to well and truly get my bake on. These bad-boys are double chocolate chip with butter icing on top, and if I may say so myself, they were rather delicious.

Excuse the shoddy photography won't you, I don't have a camera at the moment so had to use Photobooth! Anyway, I was feeling quite proud of my creations... Until I decided to search for further baking inspiration, where I came across a myriad of cupcakes so perfectly made, beautifully coloured and painstakingly decorated, they are like mini works of art. I must definately invest in some food colouring in order to make some lovely technicolour buns. Feel free to drool over these.

Tennessee Waltz

After a rather long hiatus - sorry! - I am back with a vengeance. Well.. back with a new lovely lady of fantastic style to show you! Today's muse is Tennessee Thomas of the LA-based girl band, The Like. Whilst all three members have a most aesthetically-pleasing way of dressing, it is the fantastically named Tennessee who has really caught my eye. Rubbing shoulders with some of the best-dressed kids around, such as Alexa Chung, Mark Ronson and Zooey Deschanel, it is only fitting that she should have her own playful and charming look. She likes to team her long flowing locks with sailor-inspired pieces, envy-inducing coats and excellent hosiery galore,and the finished result is really quite wonderful. Observe..

Heads Will Roll!

Sophia Coppola's spectacular biopic of Marie Antoinette divided critics, but they were unanimous on at least one thing - it was a visual masterpiece! The lavish Versailles setting, endless Laduree macaroons and specially-made Christian Louboutins create an aesthetic so pastelly-perfect it (very nearly) brings tears to my eyes. As the late, great and ill-fated Queen of France grew bored of a loveless marriage, she spends like there's no tomorrow leading to a wonderful shopping-and-cakes montage, linked here for your viewing pleasure. Here are a few lovely stills from the film to feast your eyes upon...

Unfortunately, it's not always wholly practical to flounce around in the couture dresses the Dauphin favoured, but we can certainly draw aspects of her look for the every day. The makeup worn in the 17th century court seems to be all about the rouge and lipstick, and I reckon it makes a refreshing change from focusing on your eyes! Apply petal pink blusher lavishly to the apples of your cheeks and a dark, matte cerise lipstick for a royal, Gallic look. Whilst nail varnish wasn't round back then, Marie certainly seems keen on her pastels, so I think she would adore candy colours to make her nails look like mini-macaroons. With all that spare time on her hands, she no doubt had an decadent beauty routine involving plenty of parfum. As for her royal tresses, she liked them high, powdered and extravagantly decorated.

Pretty Girls Make Graves

Have you ever noticed that when magazines do beauty awards, the winners all suspiciously seem to be new products and advertising in the magazine? Call me sceptical, but how could they possibly be the reader's tried and tested all time favourites - they've only had them a week! Now I'm not a beauty expect by any means, but I've been enhancing my ol' mug for over five years now and I reckon I've got a pretty good idea what works and what doesn't. For your peace of mind, I don't want to look like a page three model but I also don't go for the no- makeup look... So here is my list of beautifiers that grace my face daily.

Bourjois 10 Hour Sleep Effect Foundation

Ahh if only I slept ten hours a day, then I'd have no need to paint my face. But I do so thankfully, there's this. It's a very thin, sheer consistancy with subtle shimmery particles that don't glitter and does look like it could feasably be your inner health, radiating from within!
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat

Again, my lack of sleep makes this badboy neccessary to make me look alive! It never looks cakey and doesn't crease, and presuming you opt for the right colour it blends in perfectly. A word of warning though; once you've had this, no bog standard under eye concealer will ever do!
Chanel Powder Compact

Very matte, finely milled, good range of colours... Ok, ok, I will admit the packaging is a massive part of why I love this so much. If I have to whip out my powder for regular touch ups, I may as well do it in style with that classic interlocking C logo. Plus it does it's job very well, and lasts for ages.
Benefit Dandelion Powder

As a milk bottle white, dark haired girl, this is THE perfect blusher. Nothing could hold a candle to it. Bordering on baby pink, it has illuminating particles and somehow looks very natural on me. Plus I have had it for about three years and have only just began to see the bottom, therefore it's definately splurging on.
Benefit High Beam

Slight pattern developing here... I love natural shimmer, Benefit and cheek makeup. Cheeks are criminally under appreciated! This little gem either carves cheekbones where you have none, or enchances a killer bone structure, depending on what your mother gave you. For a night out, I like to dot it in a C shape along my brow bones and cheekbones, and tiny dots in the inner corner of my eyes and in my cupid's bow. It's a very subtle but effective way to enhance your skin.

Rimmel Professional Liquid Eyeliner

I like to draw on a little black winged line above each eye, every day. I feel naked without them. Admittedly I have never tried any fancier brand's liquid eyeliner offerings, but then again I've never needed to. Rimmel's goes on smoothly (and easily, once you know how), stays put, but comes off withut difficulty when it comes to face-washing time.

Rimmel Glam'eyes Mascara

I need to be honest with you here... my eyelashes are a bit crap. They never look magnificent like other girl's do. I am either cursed with average lashes or I'm missing out on some secret application tip; I'm really not sure. However, this Rimmel one is the best so far, and I've tried many a mascara, even Chanel! It's not too clumpy or heavy, the brush makes it posible to push my eyelashes up and seperate them and it doesn't smudge all down my face. A winning formula, I think.

Boots No7 Stay Perfect Lipstick in 'Angel' and Moisture Drench in 'Dare Devil'

In the book I am currently dipping my nose in, a French lady claimed that all a woman really needs is two lipsticks and a lover - a lipstick for day and night, and a lover for, well, loving. I can't assist with the latter but I can recommend two ideal candidates for your lipwear. Angel is the perfect, natural pinky-beige shade for daytime looks or if you opt for a smokey eye on the night. Dare Devil is a bold, pillarbox red with 'bluey undertones' (this is beauty jargon meaning it's not orangey red, and suits people with my colouring) perfect for nights on the razz! Simple.

Girl With One Eye

Florence Welch (aka Florence and The Machine) and I have something in common - an intense love of all things sequinned! Particularly on tour, where she brings 'as many weird clothes' as she can pack, she displays an admirable collection of sparkly dresses, jackets and even hotpants that make us fellow magpies green with envy. She manages to avoid fancy dress connotations by having long, red Disney princess-esque hair, which in my books makes it perfectly acceptable to dress like life is one long disco. She also pulls off the toned-down look with aplomb, see the 3rd from last picture for evidence - checked and polka dots combo topped off with ankle socks, lovely! Dream Shopping

Since I am semi-insomniac and therefore unable to sleep, I decided to indulge in a bit of Dream Shopping. This pleasant activity is only considered dangerous if you a fairly extravagant type and may lead to Actual Shopping. This particular scenario involves me being set loose in Urban Outfitters with a million pounds.... Oh yes please! Who needs actual dreaming when you can do this?

The above jacket is not from Urban Outfitters, however it is far too lovely to leave out. It's from Topshop, and will hopefully be presented to yours truly on my birthday!

I hope you feel very privileged because today, dear readers, I'm going to share with you a few of my favourite books. I know - I am too kind. (Sincerely though, I can't recommend them enough!) The following are books I keep re-reading, being inspired by and passing them on to my dearly beloveds...
Nylon: Pretty

Nylon magazine has arguably the most original approach to beauty journalism. Instead of just telling us what makeup was going down the catwalks that season, it refers to figures of pop culture as inspiration - not just your standard Audrey Hepburn either, but more quirky options such as Anna Karina and even Prince. This book compiles a comprehensive list of beauty icons from the 20's to the present, alongside cult products, ten most evocative perfumes, iconic hairstyles and illustrated makeup looks, alongside millions of inspiring beauty editorials. Written in amusing, intriguing fashion, I regularly look to this book for beauty inspiration.

The Cheap Date Guide To Style

Based of the now-defunct Cheap Date magazine, this book is rather unique and like no style book I have read before. Unlike most style books, it does not prescribe a specific formula to be considered 'stylish', instead focusing on experimenting, originality and making mistakes. It features interviews with style legends such as Anita Pallenburg, Vivienne Westwood and Chloe Sevigny. It's very student-friendly as the book focuses on CHEAP shopping such as charity shops and jumble sales, which is just as well because every time I read this book I want to go shopping.

Burlesque And The Art Of The Teese/ Fetish And The Art Of The Teese

Dita Von Teese's wonderful book is split into halves - the burlesque half is saucy in a beautiful, family friendly way and the fetish half is, well, complete with rather risque photos of the stunning Ms Teese. Perhaps put it out of sight when elderly relatives or those of a nervous disposition are visiting. This book is a mishmash of autobiography, the history of burlesque and fetish and profiles of specific figures in the glamour field, all the while heavily scattered with amazing photography. The costumes are so decadent and beautiful your jaw will drop! But my favourite part is Dita's detailed analysis of the looks of the decade, and tips on how to reproduce them yourself. Dita is surprisingly humorous and you can tell she has a huge passion for all things vintage and burlesque.

The Perks Of Being A Wall Flower

Probably my all time favourite novel, I've read this a ridiculous amount of times and passed it on to pretty much everyone I know! It is a modern retelling of the classic Catcher In The Rye - another of my favourites. Written in the form of anonymous letters, it centers around the awkward, troubled yet intelligent Charlie and his life after his only friend killed himself. But this novel, despite the serious issues, is actually full of touching, heartwarming and laugh out loud lines as the introverted youngster makes new friends and even falls in love.

The Rotters Club

I was inspired to read this after seeing the TV series aaaages ago (did anyone else see it?) and I'm glad I did! Set in Birmingham in the Thatcher era, it is a wonderful coming of age novel full of hilarious little anecdotes, such as the lovable protagonist, Ben, finding a pair of swimming trunks in a locker and seeing it as a sign from God!

The Virgin Suicides

The novel which my favourite Sophia Coppola film is based upon. Centered around the five Lisbon sisters as they begin to rebel against their parents, lose a sister, fall in love/lust and become imprisoned in their own home. A word of warning though: As the title suggests, there isn't a happy ending...

Faithfull

Ms Faithfull is one of my heroines and I took this autobiography out of the library merely to learn more about her life. I wasn't expecting such a witty, intelligent and fascinating recollection of one hell of a life. This lady has done everything from being filthy rich and bed hopping with The Rolling Stones, to being homeless and addicted to heroin.

Born Again Vintage

I WANT THIS BOOK!!!! According to my research, it teaches you how to re-work unwearable vintage items into unique, covetable items. It sounds pretty amazing.

Being a redhead is back in fashion, it would seem. Wikipedia tells me that only 1-2% of the world's population has red hair, although I reckon this statistic is considerably higher in the fashionable parts of London! The most unusual of all hair colours adds an extra flash of colour to your look and tends to come complete with lovely pale skin and freckles. Here are some of the finest examples around...

... Because red hair is so ravishing it inspired an entire Art Movement! Now if only my hair wasn't nearly black I would be muchos tempted to reach for the dye....

Femmes Fatale

Ipso Facto, the pop-noir foursome currently making waves in music, hail from the same seaside town that was the birthplace of, amongst others, The Horrors, The She Set and These New Puritans. All I can say is, there must be something in the water, because as the above quote illustrates, they just look plain better than everyone else! Ipso Facto are no exception, matching their moody, 60's garage influenced sounds with an equally impressive dress sense. They often sport identical, Louise Brookes style jet black bobs and have a penchant for lace, leather and monochrome. They wouldn't look out of place in a silent movie, and their unique look is said to have inspired YSL's A/W08 collection. They are the muses of the promising new designer, Hannah Marshall, who favours tight, black, leather - perfect on-stage wear for the girl band on everyones (shiny black) lips!

Like A Virgin

The Virgin Suicides is Sofia Coppola's first full length feature, and one of my favourite films of all time. It's an almost Grimm-esque fairytale about the five beautiful Lisbon sisters, in the prime of their lives but trapped by their... well, not evil, let's say over-protective, parents. Set in 1970's suburban America, the girls sport some rather lovely, floaty, romantic creations that wouldn't look out of place trotting down the Chloe runway today. Lux, the most rebellious of the sisters, favours high waisted shorts and flowery cheesecloth tops for sunbathing in the garden, and dresses skimpy enough to bring her strict Catholic mother out in sweats! Meanwhile Cecelia, the youngest, prefers to float around in a 1920's wedding dress with the hem ripped off to the knees. And Lux's love interest, the divine Tripp Fontaine, wears some impressively kitsch corduroy suits and paisley shirts, not forgetting his signature aviators to make the girls swoon.

Along with the costumes, Sofia has thought of everything to really make this film's aesthetic so ethereal. Special lighting techniques ensured the girls hair and skin were positively glowing, giving them an angelic, surreal look. Realistically depicting a house full of teenage girls, the Lisbon's bedrooms are over-the-top feminine and charmingly cluttered, with everything from empty perfume bottles to Catholic memorabilia. The score of the film is spot on, fusing nostalgic seventies numbers such as Heart's 'Magic Man' with the eery, electronic sounds of the french band Air, who composed a whole album especially for the film. Overall, this film is an excellent introduction to Coppola's films yet to come. Enjoy...

Sofia, You've Got to See Her!

Sofia Coppola is the actress turned designer/ model/ muse responsible for some of the prettiest, dreamiest films around, her most prolific yet being The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation and Marie Antionette. She also bought us THAT White Stripes video featuring Kate Moss. The black and white video for 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' showed the world's most famous super model writhing, cavorting and dancing around, ricocheting the band, the model and the director to further international fame. And you've no doubt found yourself humming along to the 'day in the (fabulous) life of' style ad for Miss Dior Cherie, featuring Bridgit Bardot's Moi Je Joue.

Coppola's professional trademarks are sun-bleached, sugar-coated but haunting imagery juxtaposed with modern, punchy music, and Sofia is her own best advertisement, rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in fashion and music. Her own personal style fits the aesthetics of her films, favouring girly, elegant garments, and she has become a style icon of down town, New York style, and is regularly featured in best dressed lists. I suppose it can't hurt being Marc Jacob's best friend. Here are a few of my favourite outfits of hers, as well as a some images from her work...

Mag Of My Dreams.

Lula is by far the most aesthetically pleasing magazine I have ever had the good fortune to lay my hands upon. Everything, from the gorgeous clothes featured to the especially-designed font, is dreamy and beautiful! With the whimsical styling, pastel colours galore and stunning settings, it is a bit like a Sophia Coppola film in magazine format, and has been known to feature articles on The Virgin Suicides and Coppola's muse and regular leading lady, Kirsten Dunst. It has also featured such other lovely dressed ladies such as Natasha Khan, Keira Knightley and Zooey Deschanel.

Since I am relatively late to jump on the bandwagon and only have a few issues to my name, I recently looked into buying past issues on Ebay and certain ones are going for as much as £95! Granted it is wonderful, very thick and on good quality paper and - here's the best bit - features very few ads indeed, but even I would say that is excessive. Now I am very glad that, as a testamant to my reverence of this magazine, I refuse to chop inspiring images out... if times get hard I can sell 'em on Ebay! Apologies in advance that this post is very image heavy, but there are so many stunning editorials I want to share...

Zooey Time!

I am very jealous of Zooey Deschanel. Not only is she unfairly pretty and the owner of my Dream Hair, but she has an AMAZING dress sense. She favours pretty, dreamy pastel colours topped off with quirky accessories, such as a bow in her hair or those ingenius sparkly tights (note to self: get glittering hosiery). She is also a worthy beauty icon, with her lovely country singer style locks and unusual pale skin. She never looks too made up, with her rosey blush and dark pink lips. As well as her impressive style and beauty choices, she has starred in some rather excellent films, such as Almost Famous, and my most eagerly anticipated summer flick, '500 Days Of Summer'. As well as being an actress, she also posesses a lovely, old world-y voice showcased perfectly in her side project, She & Him (click here for the link).

Living In A Ghost Town

Last night I watched my ol' fave Ghost World for the first time in years. I used to love Enid- the feisty heroine played by Thora Birch- as a fourteen year old, and she still ticks all the boxes for what I like in the protagonist of a film: sarcastic, cultured, not quite perfect and with a bloody good dress sense. It's no secret that a certain Ms Luella Bartley was so inspired by the cult hit to base her entire Spring/ Summer 2008 collection around Enid's get ups! Last year, the stand out ditzy prints of said collection got done till their death, but there's no reason why we can't draw inspiration from the rest of the excellent styling. Here's a few of Enid's best looks...

Today I am going to share with you some pretty pictures of the very stylish DJ collective, The She Set. The all-female 'sect' spin records ranging from 50's rockabilly to the current bands of their friends/ relatives/ boyfriends/ girlfriends, all the while managing to look amazing. With a fondness for vintage, they each have their own unique look, whether they look like they're roaming round 1960's Paris (always a good look) or a perfect 1950's doll. They have already been featured in such cutting edge style bibles as i.D, Super Super and Disorder. I am an eighteen year old fashion journalism student, and I've decided it's about time I tentatively make my mark on the blogging world! I've been an admirer of many style-based blogs for a fair while and would like to put my own perception out there for all to view.

My own personal style is greatly influenced by the music that I like, people I see on the street, beautiful films and my loved ones around me, and I hope this blog will reflect that.
